10 to No 10 for the 10th
10 young carers, including three from Winchester, visited No 10 Downing Street just ahead of the 10th Annual Young Carers Festival. Read all about it.
Who is a Young Carer?
A Young Carer is first and foremost a young person - with all the concerns, needs, and insecurities of a young person - but one who in addition has caring responsibilities within his or her family. This generally involves helping to look after a parent or sibling who suffers from long-term illness, disability, or addiction. Young Carers include
- An 8-year-old boy helping his mum with household chores because she has MS
- A 12-year-old girl helping her elder brother who is autistic
- A 15-year-old boy looking after his younger siblings because his father is an alcoholic
What do we offer?
- Information and advice
- Someone to listen to how you are feeling
- A range of different activities and trips - and time for a laugh
- The opportunity to meet other young people in similar situations and make new friends
- A regular club to meet up at and chat and relax
- Support in schools
- Opportunities to learn new skills such as first aid and cooking
- A Befriending Scheme (one-to-one support)
- Help finding other support that you may need
